Recycling in Residences

The University of Ottawa Residences do not have the same recycling system as the rest of the campus. Here is a list of what is permitted in the Residence recycling system.

Compost

ACCEPTABLE:

  • All food, including meat
  • Coffee grounds and tea bags
  • Dryer lint
  • Chartwells clamshell containers, microwave popcorn bags
  • Food-soiled paper of any kind (paper towels, napkins, tissues)
  • Plants

NOT ACCEPTABLE:

  • Plastic and biodegradable bags (they do not break down in our composter)
Electronic Waste

ACCEPTABLE:

  • Computers and computer parts (keyboards, mice, monitors, hard drives, optical drives- CD, Blu–ray, DVD, HD-DVD), printers and photocopiers
  • Radios and TVs, cameras, video recorders
  • Cell phones, pagers and answering machines
  • Audio and video players and recorders (MP3, cassette, digital), speakers

NOTE: If your residence has a recycling room, please place the e-waste beside the recycling bins for pick-up. If not, please bring to 90U, Friel, Rideau or Hyman Soloway reception.

Mixed Paper

ACCEPTABLE:

  • Newspapers, flyers and magazines
  • Cereal and cracker boxes (liners removed)
  • Fine paper, Post-it notes, file folders and envelopes
  • Brown paper bags (unsoiled)

NOT ACCEPTABLE:

  • Disposable coffee cups
  • Milk & juice cartons
  • paper soiled with food and pizza boxes
Plastic, Metal & Glass

ACCEPTABLE:

  • Plastic containers, tubs and lids: #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7
  • Aluminum and tin cans
  • Milk and juice cartons
  • Glass bottles

NOT ACCEPTABLE:

  • Plastic wrapping
  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic film
  • ceramics
Other Materials
  • Cardboard: flatten and place beside recycling bins (Brooks and Hyman Soloway have large grey bins specifically for cardboard)
  • Clothing and household goods to donate: place in grey donation box on front porch of the Free Store
  • Ink cartridges, used writing instruments, hard Styrofoam (laptop or t.v. packaging foam) & Brita filters : bring to the Free Store
  • Batteries: place in white plastic container attached to most recycling counters on campus
  • Food donations: contact the SFUO Food Bank
Garbage
  • Plastic wrapping of any kind
  • Gum
